IIE DIGITAL DESK : May 28: Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the 15-year-old batting sensation, has surpassed West Indies legend Chris Gayle in the record for most sixes in a single Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The historic feat came during the IPL Eliminator match on Wednesday (May 27) against Rajasthan Royals, where the young batter produced a stunning performance that stunned the cricketing world.
Chris Gayle had previously set the record in the 2012 IPL season with 59 sixes in a single edition. However, Suryavanshi went far beyond that milestone by smashing 12 sixes in the Eliminator match alone. With this explosive performance, he took his total tally to 65 sixes in the ongoing season, comfortably overtaking Gayle and setting a new benchmark in IPL history.
Record-breaking innings, Suryavanshi reached his half-century in just 16 balls, showcasing extraordinary power-hitting ability and composure beyond his years. He was dismissed when he was just three runs short of a century, but by that point, he had already played a decisive knock that changed the course of the match. His innings of 77 runs came off just 29 balls and included 12 sixes and 5 fours, marking one of the most destructive batting performances of the season.
Beyond the overall six-hitting record in a single IPL season, Suryavanshi also achieved another milestone on the same day. He registered the highest number of sixes in the powerplay phase of any IPL match, hitting 8 sixes during the first six overs. His dominance in the early overs underlined his aggressive intent and fearless approach at the crease.
Suryavanshi set a new record for the most runs scored in the powerplay during a single IPL season, accumulating 490 runs in the first six overs. This surpassed the previous record held by David Warner, who had scored 467 runs in the powerplay during the 2016 IPL season.
The teenage cricketer has firmly placed himself among the most explosive batters in IPL history, drawing widespread attention from fans and cricket experts alike.
