IIE DIGITAL DESK ; June 26: Ivory Coast created history by reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time after defeating Curaçao 2-0 in their final Group E match at Philadelphia on Thursday night. Nicolas Pepe emerged as the hero of the evening, scoring both goals to guide his side to a memorable victory and secure qualification for the Round of 16.

The African nation finished the group stage with six points from three matches, registering two victories and one defeat to claim the runners-up spot in Group E. The achievement marks Ivory Coast’s maiden appearance in the World Cup knockout rounds. Although they had previously qualified for the FIFA World Cup on three occasions between 2006 and 2014, they had never managed to progress beyond the group stage until now.

Germany also completed the group stage with six points despite suffering a surprising 2-1 defeat against Ecuador in the other Group E fixture. However, Julian Nagelsmann’s side topped the group thanks to their superior head-to-head record. Ecuador, who finished with four points, also advanced to the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s eight best third-placed teams.

Curaçao entered the contest hoping to spring another surprise after showing resilience in earlier matches, particularly against Ecuador, where goalkeeper Eloy Room produced an outstanding performance with 15 saves. Once again, the Caribbean side displayed determination and defensive discipline, but this time Room was unable to prevent Ivory Coast from finding the breakthrough.

Ivory Coast did not produce their most fluent attacking display and had to work hard to create clear-cut opportunities. However, they made the most of the chances that came their way. Nicolas Pepe proved the difference between the two sides, displaying composure and clinical finishing to score twice and ensure his team collected all three points in a match that carried enormous significance.

Curaçao fought bravely throughout the encounter and attempted to trouble the African side on several occasions, but they lacked the cutting edge in front of goal. Their spirited efforts ultimately fell short as Ivory Coast remained organized defensively and managed the game effectively after taking control of the scoreline.

The final whistle sparked celebrations among the Ivory Coast players and supporters as they sealed a historic qualification for the knockout phase of the World Cup hosted across North America. It was a landmark achievement for a nation that has consistently produced talented footballers but had previously been unable to translate that quality into success on the biggest stage.

Curaçao, the defeat brought an end to an admirable debut World Cup campaign. Although they leave the tournament without progressing, the newcomers earned respect for their competitive performances and fearless approach against more experienced opponents. Ivory Coast, meanwhile, now look ahead with renewed confidence, hoping their historic breakthrough will be the beginning of an even more memorable World Cup journey.
