New Delhi (18th July 2023): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's plea challenging the Gujarat High Court order refusing to stay his conviction in a criminal defamation case will be heard by the Supreme Court on July 21.

Gandhi was convicted in 2019 by a Surat court for making defamatory remarks against then-Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in a 2013 speech. He was sentenced to two years in jail, but the conviction was stayed by the Gujarat High Court in 2020.

In his plea to the Supreme Court, Gandhi argued that the Gujarat High Court's order was "erroneous" and "violates his fundamental right to free speech".

The Supreme Court will hear Gandhi's plea on July 21. It is likely to decide whether to stay his conviction or not.
