IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Varanasi, September 24: The water level of the Ganga has started receding towards normal levels in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, but the city's famous riverfront ghats have yet to return to their usual rhythm. As the water level falls, a thick layer of silt has accumulated on the steps of several ghats, including Assi Ghat, making movement between different sections of the riverfront difficult.

The receding water has exposed large stretches of the ghats that were submerged earlier. However, the accumulated silt has created fresh challenges for visitors and local residents. The slippery layer covering the steps is making movement difficult and requires extensive cleaning before the ghats can fully resume normal activities.

With the festive season approaching, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation has accelerated its cleaning operations. Sanitation teams are regularly working at the ghats to remove the accumulated silt and restore the steps and surrounding areas. Officials are focusing on cleaning the riverfront ahead of the expected increase in the number of visitors during the upcoming festive period.

Boat services on the Ganga, however, remain suspended as a precautionary safety measure. Although the water level has begun to fall, authorities are yet to allow regular boat movement on the river. The decision has been taken keeping in mind the safety of passengers and boat operators and the prevailing river conditions.

Despite the suspension of regular boat services, Ganga Aarti rituals continue to be conducted from boats at Assi Ghat and other locations. The religious ceremonies are being organised while maintaining the restrictions on general boat movement.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the river gradually returns towards normal levels. ACP Atul Anjan Tripathi said that the water level of the Ganga is steadily decreasing, but boat operations remain suspended as a precautionary measure. He said the administration is keeping a close watch on the overall situation and will take a decision on resuming boat services after assessing the river conditions.

The authorities, normal boat services will resume only after the water level returns to a safe range and the river current becomes manageable. Until then, visitors and boat operators will have to follow the safety restrictions imposed along the river.

The improvement in the Ganga's water level has brought some relief to Varanasi, but the extensive silt deposits mean that restoration work at the ghats remains a priority. Municipal workers are continuing their efforts to clear the affected areas so that the riverfront can be made safer and more accessible ahead of the festive season.
