IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Mumbai, May 30: Consumers in Mumbai will now have to pay more for natural gas as prices of both Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) have been increased. State-owned gas distribution company Mahanagar Gas Limited announced on Saturday that it has revised gas prices upward, affecting households as well as vehicle owners across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The company’s announcement, the price of Piped Natural Gas (PNG), which is widely used for cooking and domestic purposes in households, has been increased by 50 paise per unit. At the same time, the price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), commonly used as an automotive fuel in cars, taxis, auto-rickshaws, and commercial vehicles, has been raised by ₹2 per kilogram.

The latest revision, the price of PNG in Mumbai and surrounding areas has increased to ₹52 per unit. The revised rate will apply to consumers across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and other parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region that receive gas supply through Mahanagar Gas Limited’s distribution network.

The new retail price of CNG has been fixed at ₹86 per kilogram. The increase is expected to have an impact on transportation costs, particularly for commercial vehicle operators and public transport users who rely heavily on CNG as a relatively economical and environmentally cleaner fuel option.

The latest price hike comes at a time when consumers are already facing rising living expenses. Household budgets may be affected due to the increase in PNG rates, while vehicle owners and transport operators may experience higher fuel costs because of the revised CNG prices.

Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and other regions within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region are among the largest consumers of PNG and CNG in the country. As a result, any change in gas prices directly affects a significant number of households, businesses, and transport services operating in these areas.

The revised rates announced by Mahanagar Gas Limited are effective immediately, making natural gas more expensive for both domestic and transportation use across the Mumbai metropolitan region.
