Ahead of her arrival, Kolkata has witnessed a striking visual change, with large hoardings featuring Taslima appearing at several key locations across the city, including Gariahat and Central Avenue. The writer herself shared images of the displays on social media and expressed her emotions at seeing her presence showcased publicly in the city.
Recalling her earlier experiences in Kolkata, Taslima described the current moment as a symbolic victory for freedom of expression. She remembered how, years ago, promotional hoardings of her television serial Dusahobash were removed following controversy over her work, and the show’s broadcast was also stopped. Comparing that incident with today’s scenario, she said the continued presence of the new hoardings represents a positive change.
Taslima’s return has also revived memories of a controversial phase in Bengal’s cultural history. In 2007, the publication of her novel Dwikhandito led to intense protests in Kolkata. Her outspoken writings against religious conservatism sparked unrest, creating a tense situation that required administrative intervention. During that period, the Left Front government under then Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee faced criticism after restrictions were imposed on the book and the writer was asked to leave the city.
The episode went on to become one of the most debated chapters in Bengal’s literary landscape, bringing issues such as artistic freedom, censorship and the responsibility of governments towards creative voices into sharp focus.
Years later, Taslima Nasrin’s return to Kolkata has once again placed her at the centre of public conversation. The hoardings spread across the city have become more than just promotional displays , they represent a renewed debate on literature, identity and the evolving space for freedom of expression in society.
