IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, June 18: The Calcutta High Court has upheld the decision of Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose, giving its seal of approval to the appointment of Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition.

The court stated that there was no error in the Speaker’s decision to select Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition. In the case related to the post of Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, the High Court did not issue any interim order. For now, Ritabrata Banerjee will continue to hold the position of Leader of the Opposition.

The court further noted that the Speaker’s decision will remain in effect for the time being. On Thursday, the Calcutta High Court did not intervene in the Speaker’s ruling. Justice Krishna Rao of the High Court stated that the next hearing in the case will be held on July 28, and all parties have been directed to submit affidavits on that day.

The name of Ballygunge MLA Sovandeb Chattopadhyay was proposed by the Trinamool Congress for the post of Leader of the Opposition. However, the Speaker did not implement that proposal. Instead, he appointed rebel Trinamool MLA Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition.

The Speaker’s decision, Sovandeb Chattopadhyay moved the Calcutta High Court challenging the appointment. The hearing in the case concluded on Wednesday, and the verdict was pronounced on Thursday.
