Kolkata, June 5: Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal received much-needed relief from the oppressive heat and humidity as rain lashed the region from the early hours of Friday morning. As forecast by the weather department, showers began across the city at dawn, accompanied by strong gusty winds and overcast skies. The sudden change in weather brought down temperatures slightly and provided respite from the sweltering conditions that had persisted over the past several days.

The stormy weather also caused some disruption in parts of the city. Reports emerged of several trees being uprooted and falling in Salt Lake and New Town due to the strong winds. In a number of low-lying areas, rainwater accumulated on roads, leading to temporary waterlogging and inconvenience for commuters during the morning hours.

Despite the disruptions, residents welcomed the rainfall as it significantly reduced the discomfort caused by the hot and humid weather. The drop in temperature was immediately noticeable, and the city experienced a much cooler atmosphere compared to previous days. The rain, coupled with cloudy skies, helped eliminate the intense and sticky heat that had made daily life difficult for many people.

The Alipore Meteorological Department, several districts of South Bengal are likely to continue receiving scattered thunderstorms accompanied by lightning over the next few days. The weather office has also predicted rainfall across the upper districts of North Bengal during the same period. Meteorologists explained that the recent spell of intense heat created favorable conditions for the formation of local thunderclouds, resulting in intermittent rainfall and thunderstorms across different parts of the state.

The weather pattern is expected to remain active for the next few days, with periodic rain and thunderstorms likely to occur in many districts. Authorities have advised people to remain cautious during thunderstorms, especially in areas prone to strong winds and lightning strikes.

The showers have brought a welcome break from the relentless heat, offering relief to residents across Kolkata and much of South Bengal. While the rain may continue intermittently in the coming days, it has already succeeded in bringing down temperatures and improving weather conditions significantly after a prolonged spell of uncomfortable summer heat.
