IIE DIGITAL DESK : May 29, 2025, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing critique against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of politicizing national security operations for electoral gain. Banerjee's remarks centered around 'Operation Sindoor,' a military initiative against Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack, which she claims is being leveraged by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to bolster its political narrative ahead of elections

Banerjee likened the BJP's actions to "playing political Holi by applying election colours," suggesting that the operation's naming and promotion are strategically timed to influence voters. She challenged Modi to engage in a live debate to discuss the implications of intertwining national security with political agendas.

The Chief Minister criticized the central government's decision to include Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Yusuf Pathan in an international delegation without consulting her party. Banerjee emphasized that no formal request was made to the TMC regarding participation, highlighting a lack of communication and respect for federal principles.

In response to Modi's allegations of corruption within the TMC, specifically claims of demanding "cuts and commissions" from the poor, Banerjee dismissed these as baseless and politically motivated. She accused the Prime Minister of diverting attention from pressing issues in West Bengal, such as pending central funds for welfare schemes.

The TMC has announced plans to hold 'Patriotic Rallies' to honor the soldiers involved in 'Operation Sindoor,' emphasizing solidarity and national unity over political spectacle. Banerjee reiterated her party's commitment to national security while condemning the BJP's approach to politicizing military operations.

As political tensions escalate, Banerjee's statements underscore a broader debate on the appropriate boundaries between national security initiatives and electoral politics. The discourse reflects ongoing concerns about the politicization of military actions and the importance of maintaining a clear separation between governance and political campaigning.
