In a unique cultural exchange, two iconic trams from Kolkata are set to be showcased during the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Vancouver, Canada. This initiative aims to highlight Kolkata's rich heritage and its historic tram system to a global audience.

The proposal, initiated by a private organization on November 19, 2024, received approval from the West Bengal government. The plan involves transporting two trams to Vancouver, where they will operate on a specially designated 1.7-kilometer route during the World Cup. These trams will serve as a cultural exhibit, offering visitors a glimpse into Kolkata's transportation history.

However, the project faces logistical challenges. Kolkata's trams operate on an older trolley pole system, while Vancouver's modern trams use pantograph technology. This difference raises questions about the feasibility of operating Kolkata's trams on Vancouver's tracks. Additionally, since there is an ongoing legal case in the Kolkata High Court regarding tram preservation, official permission is required to proceed with the transportation. The state transport department remains optimistic about obtaining the necessary approvals.

The FIFA World Cup 2026, co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico, is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Vancouver's BC Place Stadium, with a seating capacity of 54,500, is among the selected venues. The inclusion of Kolkata's trams is part of a broader effort to celebrate global cultures during the tournament.

This initiative not only promotes Kolkata's cultural legacy but also strengthens international ties through shared appreciation of heritage and sports.
