IIE DIGITAL DESK : Kolkata has witnessed a fresh surge in COVID-19 infections, with seven new cases reported across four hospitals, elevating West Bengal's active case count to 30. This uptick has prompted health authorities to enhance surveillance and preparedness measures.
The recent cases include patients from diverse age groups and backgrounds. Notably, an 89-year-old man from Alipore required oxygen support due to respiratory distress but is now showing signs of improvement while remaining in ICU isolation. Additionally, a private hospital off EM Bypass admitted a COVID-positive patient, and two swabs tested positive at a private hospital in Salt Lake, leading to the hospitalization of two individuals. Furthermore, two patients at the Kolkata Port Trust Hospital have also tested positive for COVID-19.
In response to the rising cases, the Infectious Diseases (ID) Hospital in Kolkata has established two dedicated COVID-19 isolation wards. This proactive measure aims to ensure prompt management should the situation escalate.
Health department officials have indicated that while the situation is under control, they are closely monitoring developments. No new COVID-specific guidelines have been issued yet, but experts suggest that implementing preventive measures could help raise public awareness and curb further transmission.
The recent infections span various age groups, including a 65-year-old woman and a 9-month-old child, highlighting the virus's reach across demographics. These cases underscore the importance of continued vigilance and adherence to safety protocols.
While the Omicron sub-lineage JN.1 is believed to be contributing to the current surge, health specialists emphasize that the situation is not alarming. They recommend resuming preventive measures like mask-wearing and hand sanitizing, especially for symptomatic and vulnerable individuals.
Mayor Firhad Hakim has assured the public that there is no need for panic at this stage, stating that the situation in Bengal has not yet necessitated the issuance of COVID Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure timely interventions if necessary.
As the city navigates this phase of the pandemic, the emphasis remains on preparedness, public awareness, and adherence to health guidelines to mitigate the spread of the virus.
