IIE Digital Desk : A prominent gynecologist in Kolkata allegedly refused to provide medical care to a pregnant Muslim woman, citing the recent Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir as justification. The incident, which occurred on Friday morning, has ignited debates about religious intolerance and medical ethics in the city.

According to reports, the woman, in her third trimester of pregnancy, visited the clinic of Dr. Rina Saha, a well-known obstetrician and gynecologist in the Bhowanipore area, seeking urgent medical attention. Upon learning of her Muslim identity, Dr. Saha reportedly stated, "We don't treat people like you. You should be killed like those in Pahalgam." Shocked and distressed by the response, the woman left the clinic and sought assistance from a nearby hospital, where she was admitted and is currently receiving care.

The incident was brought to light when a relative of the woman shared a video of the exchange on social media, which quickly went viral. The video has since been widely circulated, drawing condemnation from various quarters. Human rights organizations, political leaders, and members of the medical community have expressed their outrage over the doctor's alleged actions.

The West Bengal Medical Council has initiated an inquiry into the matter. A spokesperson for the council stated, "We are aware of the allegations and have begun a preliminary investigation. If the doctor's conduct is found to be in violation of medical ethics and professional conduct, appropriate action will be taken." The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has also condemned the incident, emphasizing the need for medical professionals to uphold the principles of non-discrimination and patient care.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee condemned the doctor's actions, stating, "Such behavior is unacceptable and goes against the very ethos of our society. We will ensure that justice is served." The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while not commenting directly on the incident, has called for a thorough investigation into the matter.

The woman's family has expressed their gratitude to the hospital that admitted her and provided the necessary medical care. They have also vowed to pursue legal action against Dr. Saha, seeking justice for the harm caused.
