IIE DIGITAL DESK : Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport has been placed on heightened security alert following a significant increase in flight cancellations and disruptions. On May 7, 2025, the airport witnessed the cancellation of 12 flights within a 24-hour period, including both domestic and international services. The affected flights comprised six departures and six arrivals, impacting routes from Ghaziabad, Dhaka, Chattogram, Chandigarh, and Srinagar
The surge in cancellations is attributed to the temporary closure of 18 airports across seven states in India following a recent airstrike on a Pakistan-based terrorist setup. This development has led to increased air traffic congestion and necessitated the suspension of runway repairs at Kolkata Airport to accommodate rerouted flights
In response to the escalating situation, airport authorities have implemented stringent security measures. A comprehensive emergency preparedness drill simulating an air raid scenario was conducted, involving key stakeholders such as the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), Customs, and Immigration authorities . Additionally, the airport has increased the deployment of armed personnel and is conducting enhanced checks, including vehicle inspections and additional frisking.
Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport well in advance to accommodate these heightened security procedures. Domestic travelers are recommended to arrive at least two hours before departure, while international passengers should arrive three hours prior to their flight . Authorities have also urged travelers to verify their flight status with airlines before heading to the airport to avoid unnecessary delays.
Despite the increased security measures and flight disruptions, airport officials have reported no significant chaos or overcrowding. Dr. Pravat Ranjan Beuria, Director of Kolkata Airport, assured the public, stating, "We are fully prepared and our security teams are on alert to handle any emergency situations"
As the situation continues to evolve, passengers are encouraged to stay informed through official airline communications and the airport's official channels for the latest updates.
