IIE DIGITAL DESK : State-run bus met with an accident near Kolkata’s Park Street on Monday morning, crashing into a road divider and causing temporary traffic disruption in the central part of the city. The mishap occurred during peak office hours, creating a brief panic among commuters and onlookers. Several passengers on board sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
According to preliminary reports, the bus, which was operating under the West Bengal Transport Corporation, was heading towards Esplanade when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle. Witnesses said the bus was not speeding but suddenly swerved and struck the divider with significant impact. The loud noise drew attention from nearby pedestrians and shopkeepers, many of whom rushed to help the passengers.
Traffic police personnel arrived quickly at the scene and helped evacuate the bus. Emergency services were also dispatched to provide first aid to those injured. Fortunately, no life-threatening injuries were reported, although two passengers were taken to a nearby hospital as a precautionary measure.
Officials suspect the cause of the accident could be mechanical failure or driver fatigue. The bus has been towed away for inspection, and an internal probe has been launched by the transport department. The driver has been taken for questioning to assess whether there was any negligence involved.
The accident led to brief congestion in the Park Street-Camac Street area, with traffic movement slowing down for nearly an hour. Authorities later confirmed that normal traffic flow was restored after the damaged bus was removed and debris was cleared.
