IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, October 6: India moves rapidly towards becoming the world's third-largest economy, the aviation sector and world-class infrastructure are expected to play a crucial role in accelerating the country's economic growth. Against this backdrop, the proposed Kalyani Greenfield Airport in Nadia district could emerge as a major infrastructure project with the potential to strengthen West Bengal's position in India's economic and connectivity landscape.

The proposed airport is being viewed not merely as a state-level infrastructure project but as a possible catalyst for establishing eastern India as one of the country's important centres of economic activity. If implemented, the project could potentially make Kolkata the third multi-airport metropolitan region in India after Delhi-NCR and Mumbai, creating new opportunities for passenger connectivity, cargo movement, investment and regional development.

A global platform for industrial and technological investment

Veteran journalist Naresh Srivastava, who has extensive knowledge of the aviation industry, said that the Kalyani-Haringhata region has already emerged as an important centre for education, healthcare and industrial activity. The area is home to institutions and facilities including the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Kalyani University, a biotechnology park, a stadium and several industrial clusters.

Srivastava, the development of a new airport could bring this entire industrial belt within direct national and international air connectivity. Improved aviation access could help attract foreign direct investment while also giving a significant boost to sectors such as medical tourism and information technology.

Greater connectivity could make it easier for investors, entrepreneurs, professionals and international visitors to reach the region. The resulting expansion of business activity could create a wider economic ecosystem around Kalyani and Haringhata and potentially contribute to the state's as well as the country's economic growth.

Potential to become a logistics and international trade powerhouse

Senior official at the state secretariat told Hindusthan Samachar that the proposed airport could become an important milestone for India's Act East policy and for strengthening trade with neighbouring countries. Kalyani is connected to National Highway 12 and an expanding railway network, while its proximity to the Bangladesh border could provide an additional strategic advantage for developing the area as a logistics and cargo hub.

A strong air cargo network could significantly improve the movement of agricultural products, textiles and manufactured goods from eastern India. Faster transportation and better access to international markets could strengthen supply chains and potentially provide fresh momentum to India's exports.

The airport could therefore serve not only passenger traffic but also the wider logistics ecosystem. Efficient cargo movement would be particularly important for products that require faster transportation and access to national and international markets.

Reduced pressure on Kolkata airport and improved ease of doing business

Kolkata's existing Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport is currently handling a substantial volume of passenger and aviation traffic, with demand continuing to grow. Increasing air traffic has placed additional pressure on existing infrastructure and capacity.

The construction of a new greenfield airport at Kalyani could help distribute aviation traffic more efficiently and reduce pressure on Kolkata's existing airport. Additional capacity could provide greater flexibility for commercial flights, cargo operations and passenger services.

Improved air connectivity could also contribute to a better business environment. Faster access to markets, business centres and industrial clusters could help reduce travel time and improve the overall ease of doing business for companies operating in eastern India.

New chapter for employment and regional development

Veteran journalist Naresh Srivastava said that the proposed greenfield project, expected to cover around 2,000 acres, could create a large number of direct and indirect employment opportunities. An airport of this scale could generate demand across several associated sectors, including hospitality, hotels, commercial complexes, transportation, retail and other service industries.

The economic impact could extend well beyond the airport's immediate surroundings. Nadia, Murshidabad and North 24 Parganas could potentially benefit from improved connectivity and increased commercial activity. Local businesses could gain access to new markets, while young people in the region could get opportunities to participate in globally connected industries.

Srivastava, the Kalyani Greenfield Airport could eventually become much more than a new aviation facility. It could serve as a major bridge connecting eastern India's trade, industry and employment opportunities with the global economic network.

He said the project could also contribute to the broader vision of a developed India in the 21st century by creating stronger infrastructure, expanding connectivity and bringing new economic opportunities to eastern India.

The proposed airport has also featured in statements by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. He has alleged that the previous Mamata Banerjee government did not extend adequate cooperation to the Centre's development initiatives in West Bengal and had created obstacles to the state's infrastructure development.

Adhikari, after the BJP government came to power, work on new airports and the expansion of aviation infrastructure in West Bengal has been pursued under the Centre's ambitious aviation initiatives.

The Kalyani Greenfield Airport proposal, therefore, has been presented as part of a broader vision for strengthening aviation connectivity and economic infrastructure in eastern India. If the project moves forward, its impact could extend across passenger travel, cargo logistics, investment, employment and industrial development, potentially giving the Kalyani-Haringhata region a new role in India's emerging economic landscape.
