Kolkata (August 26,2023) : The West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the remarks made by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, who called for the elimination of rapists through "encounters" like in Uttar Pradesh. The WBHRC has issued a notice to Adhikari, asking him to explain his remarks within 15 days. The commission has also sought a report from the state government on the matter.

Adhikari's remarks have drawn widespread criticism from the opposition parties. The Trinamool Congress has demanded his arrest for advocating extra-judicial killings. The WBHRC's move is a welcome step. It sends a strong message that the state will not tolerate any calls for violence or vigilantism. The commission should investigate the matter thoroughly and take appropriate action against Adhikari if he is found to have violated any laws.
