IIE Digital Desk : The skies over Kolkata were abuzz with mystery on Monday night as multiple unidentified drone-like objects were spotted hovering over key areas of the city, prompting immediate investigations by both police and defense authorities.
According to officials, at least eight to ten such objects were observed flying over prominent locations including Hastings, Vidyasagar Setu, Maidan, and Park Circus. The initial sighting was reported by personnel at the Hastings Police Station around 8:45 PM, who noted the objects moving from the direction of Maheshtala in South 24 Parganas district towards the city center.
The Kolkata Police's Special Task Force (STF) and the Detective Department have launched a comprehensive probe into the incident, exploring all possible angles, including espionage. The Indian Army's Eastern Command has also been alerted, given the proximity of some sightings to Fort William, the army's headquarters in the region.
"We are probing the matter from all angles, including the possibility of espionage," a senior police officer stated. The Defence Ministry has acknowledged the reports and urged the public to refrain from speculation until the investigations yield concrete information.
The sudden appearance of these drone-like objects has raised significant concerns about airspace security and surveillance protocols in the region. Authorities are working diligently to ascertain the origin and purpose of these unidentified aerial vehicles, with efforts underway to analyze CCTV footage and gather eyewitness accounts.
This incident follows a recent ban by the Bengal Police on unauthorized drone usage in sensitive areas, highlighting the growing apprehension regarding aerial surveillance and the potential for misuse.
As investigations continue, the city remains on high alert, with law enforcement agencies intensifying their vigilance to ensure the safety and security of Kolkata's airspace. Further updates are awaited as authorities delve deeper into this perplexing occurrence.
