IIE DIGITAL DESK : Kolkata, May 9, 2025 — Kolkata Police have arrested five individuals in connection with the ₹2.66 crore robbery that occurred in the Entally area earlier this week. The arrests have led to the recovery of ₹29 lakh in cash, as authorities continue their investigation into the high-profile case.
The incident took place on Monday, May 5, when two employees of a foreign currency exchange agency were transporting a substantial amount of cash in a taxi from their office on SN Banerjee Road to the State Bank of India branch in Park Circus. At approximately 11:40 AM, as the taxi reached Philips Crossing, two unidentified individuals forcibly entered the vehicle. They directed the driver to proceed to a secluded lane in the Kamardanga area, where several accomplices were waiting. The group then robbed the employees of the cash-filled suitcase and fled the scene.
Initial investigations led to the arrest of three individuals, including an employee of the foreign currency exchange agency, who is suspected of providing insider information to the robbers. Further interrogation resulted in the apprehension of the taxi driver, Alamgir Khan alias Babu, from the Topsia area. Another suspect, Shahrukh Sheikh, was arrested from Mandirbazar in South 24-Parganas.
The police have also detained Sanjib Das alias Bocha of Beliaghata and Md. Sarfaraz alias Sonu of Entally. During questioning, they confessed to their involvement in the crime and revealed that Riju Hazra, a relative of Das and an employee at the same currency exchange agency, had provided them with information about the cash transfer. Hazra was subsequently arrested from his residence in the Tangra area.
Authorities have recovered ₹29 lakh from the arrested individuals and are actively pursuing leads to apprehend other suspects involved in the robbery. The police are also investigating the possibility of additional insider involvement and are working to recover the remaining stolen funds.
This incident has raised concerns about the security protocols of financial institutions and the need for stringent measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. The Kolkata Police have assured the public that they are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of citizens and financial entities in the city.
