Kolkata, May 15, 2023: Mohammad Ali Park has been closed for 4 years. An elderly resident of the area has filed a public interest case in Calcutta High Court to restore the atmosphere of Durga Puja inside the park. Complainant complains that Mayor of Calcutta promised but did not work. For 4 years the puja is being held elsewhere. Due to the closure of the park, the local people are facing problems. The petitioner also brought up his problems in the court due to the closure of the park. The case is being heard in the High Court on Monday. The case will be heard by a division bench of Chief Justice TS Shivagnam and Justice Hiranmoy Bhattacharya.
75-year-old Premchand Aggarwal filed the public interest case in the High Court. He claimed to be the former vice-president of the puja committee. According to him, it was not possible to perform Durga Puja there due to non-repair of the park. Not only the Puja, the people of the area are affected in many ways. Earlier, many people used to go for morning walk to that park for free air. There was physical exercise. Children used to play in that park. Now everything is closed.'' Now many people are having problems even getting enough water.
Note that the first Durga Puja started in 1978 at Mohammad Ali Park. Before that, the puja was held at Tarachand Dutta Street. This puja started there in 1969. As the road was narrow, the police struggled to control the crowd. On the order of the High Court, the puja was shifted to Muhammad Ali Park. Since then the puja has been held there. The problem started in 2019. The park's old underground reservoir was damaged. Engineers of Jadavpur University advised to close this park to avoid accidents. As a result, the puja inside the park was also stopped. After visiting the park, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim said that the reservoir will be renovated soon. Puja will be started again inside the park. Complainant complains that the work has not progressed even after 4 years. This famous park in North Kolkata is still closed.
