IIE DIGITAL DESK : The embarrassing incident that has raised serious questions about security, a battery was allegedly stolen from a police vehicle in Kolkata while it was parked overnight near the city’s Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. The incident has prompted an investigation by the police, who are now scanning CCTV footage from the area in an attempt to identify the culprits.

According to police sources, the vehicle belonged to the East Division of Kolkata Police and had been deployed for official duty in the area. The police car was reportedly parked on East Rajapur Road in the Survey Park locality during the night. At the time of the incident, no driver was present in the vehicle, which is believed to have given miscreants the opportunity to strike.

The matter came to light the following day when a police personnel inspected the vehicle and discovered that its battery had gone missing. The officer immediately informed senior officials about the theft, triggering concern within the department since the incident involved a police vehicle itself.

Police said the vehicle is usually operated by three different drivers who take turns depending on duty schedules. On the night of the incident, one of the drivers had parked the vehicle on East Rajapur Road before leaving the spot. When questioned later, the driver reportedly could not provide any information about the theft or how the battery disappeared from the vehicle.

After receiving the complaint, senior officers directed personnel to conduct searches in nearby areas in the hope of recovering the stolen battery. However, despite checking several locations, the missing equipment has not yet been traced.

The incident, an official complaint was lodged at Survey Park Police Station. Investigators suspect that the thieves may have taken advantage of the absence of any driver or police personnel in the vehicle at night. The miscreants are believed to have opened the vehicle and removed the battery before fleeing the scene.

To identify those responsible, police have begun reviewing CCTV footage from surveillance cameras installed in and around the locality. Officers are carefully examining recordings from nearby streets and establishments to track suspicious movements during the time when the theft is believed to have taken place.

The unusual nature of the incident has also raised questions about security arrangements for police vehicles parked in public areas. Authorities are now focusing on identifying the suspects through video evidence and tracing the stolen battery, while internal discussions are also underway on strengthening safeguards to prevent such incidents in the future.

The investigation continues, officials hope that CCTV footage and local intelligence will help them locate the culprits and recover the stolen equipment soon. The incident has nevertheless sparked discussion within police circles about the need for stricter monitoring of official vehicles, especially when they are left unattended during night hours.
