IIE Digital Desk: Kiev's full-scale invasion of Russia in February 2022 has led to Russian military casualties exceeding 1.43 million, as reported by Ukraine, underscoring the high human and military expenses of a war that is still ongoing throughout Eastern Europe. These numbers, released by the General Staff of Ukraine, include dead or wounded members of staff, captured and/or otherwise unable to continue combat operations. However, the numbers have not been independently tested.

According to Ukrainian officials, Russian forces suffered additional casualties during intense fighting across multiple front-line sectors in recent days. Russia has suffered significant losses in the form of tanks, armoured vehicles and drones, as well as other combat equipment including artillery systems, during the conflict, according to Kyiv. Despite the increased military activity between Russia and Ukraine, Moscow has not commented on the latest figures and seldom discloses exact figures regarding battlefield casualties. Ukraine witnessed a massive missile and drone attack from Russia, which resulted in civilian casualties and significant damage to residential properties and critical infrastructure. Additionally, several Ukrainian cities were targeted by Russian air strikes on Monday and Wednesday. According to the Ukrainian government, their air defence infrastructures were able to intercept most of the projectile strikes that hit Ukraine, but some of them caused significant harm.

In response, Ukraine launched one of its most extensive drone attacks on Moscow and its surrounding areas. Many of the drones were intercepted by air defence systems, but some attacks are believed to have caused damage to infrastructure and caused fires. Both sides' reliance on long-range strikes to combat enemy losses has broadened the scope of the conflict beyond traditional battlefronts.

It is noted by defence experts that the war has become increasingly expensive for both Russia and Ukraine, with neither side gaining an absolute victory in battles over the past few years. The conflict has caused significant losses in personnel and equipment for both sides, although estimates of casualties vary widely. Daily life in Ukraine has been severely impacted by displacement and repeated attacks on energy facilities, transportation networks, and urban centres. Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, Ukraine is still receiving support from international allies in the form of military assistance, financial aid, and humanitarian aid.

The most recent casualty reports highlight the intensity of the conflict and the challenges that both countries are grappling with. With ongoing missile strikes, drone activity, and heavy airstrikes across multiple fronts, any hope for an immediate ceasefire is doubted.
