IIE DIGITAL DESK : Durgapur, March 20: The severe drinking water crisis triggered widespread unrest in Durgapur on Friday morning, as angry residents took to the streets and blocked a key roadway in the Majher More area. The protest, which stemmed from prolonged irregularities in water supply, brought vehicular movement to a grinding halt and created a tense atmosphere across the locality.

Discontent had been simmering for quite some time over the erratic and inadequate supply of drinking water. The situation reached a flashpoint on Friday morning when residents gathered in large numbers near the Sagorbhanga pumping station, demanding answers to a question that has long troubled them: “Why is there no water?” The protest quickly escalated as demonstrators raised slogans and expressed their frustration over what they described as administrative apathy.

After staging a demonstration at the pumping station, the agitated residents moved onto the nearby state road and began a blockade, effectively disrupting traffic and causing inconvenience to commuters. The road blockade not only highlighted the severity of the water crisis but also underscored the growing anger among citizens who claim they have been repeatedly ignored despite raising the issue multiple times.

Police forces soon arrived at the scene in an attempt to bring the situation under control and persuade the protesters to lift the blockade. However, their efforts were met with resistance as demonstrators surrounded the police personnel and continued their agitation. The confrontation added to the tension in the area, making it clear that the residents were in no mood to back down without concrete assurances.

The situation took a further political turn when a local leader of the Trinamool Congress arrived at the protest site. Instead of calming the crowd, his presence drew sharp reactions from the agitators, who vented their anger directly at him. Residents accused political representatives of failing to address their basic needs and ignoring repeated pleas for a stable water supply.

Protesters warned that their agitation would continue indefinitely unless a permanent solution to the water shortage was implemented. Their firm stance reflects the depth of the crisis and the urgency with which they expect the administration to act. Many residents expressed concerns about daily hardships caused by the lack of water, stating that the issue has severely impacted their routine lives.

The incident has also triggered a fresh round of political blame games, with opposition voices likely to seize upon the situation to question the efficiency of local governance. Despite assurances reportedly given by the administration, the atmosphere in the area remains tense, with uncertainty looming over how quickly the situation can be normalized.

Durgapur grapples with this escalating crisis, the unfolding events serve as a stark reminder of how essential civic issues like water supply can rapidly transform into flashpoints of public unrest when left unaddressed for too long.
