Kolkata ( July 14,2023):The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered a setback in the panchayat elections in West Bengal, losing ground in Lok Sabha areas won by its sitting MPs. In the 2021 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won 18 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal. However, in the panchayat elections held on May 14 and 21, 2023, the BJP won only 11 of the 18 Lok Sabha areas.

The BJP's losses were particularly pronounced in the districts of Purulia, Bankura, and Jhargram, which are considered to be its strongholds. In Purulia, the BJP won only 2 of the 6 Lok Sabha areas, down from 5 in the 2021 Lok Sabha elections. In Bankura, the BJP won only 1 of the 4 Lok Sabha areas, down from 3 in the 2021 Lok Sabha elections. And in Jhargram, the BJP won only 1 of the 3 Lok Sabha areas, down from 2 in the 2021 Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP's losses are likely due to a number of factors, including the party's unpopularity in the state, the lack of a strong grassroots organization, and the defection of several key leaders to the Trinamool Congress. The BJP's losses in the panchayat elections are a sign of trouble for the party in West Bengal. The party will need to do some serious introspection if it wants to be competitive in the next assembly elections, which are due in 2026.
