
IIE DIGITAL DESK : Police have arrested Amit Chakraborty, also known as Noni, in connection with allegations of assault and extortion involving a real estate promoter in the Raghunathpur area. The accused, described as a close associate of Debraj Chakraborty, was produced before the Barasat court on Wednesday, where the police sought custody for further interrogation.
The incident dates back to December 2025, when a builder identified as Kishore Halder, a promoter operating in the Baguihati police station area of Raghunathpur, was allegedly demanded ₹50 lakh as extortion money. It is reported that he initially paid ₹3 lakh but refused to pay the remaining amount, after which he was allegedly assaulted.
The victim has claimed that he was brutally attacked with iron rods, resulting in serious injuries. Following the complaint, he lodged a written FIR at the Baguihati police station, prompting an investigation into the matter.
The case, police had already arrested Trinamool Congress Councillor Samaresh Chakraborty from Ward No. 9 in connection with the same extortion and assault case. The latest arrest of Amit Chakraborty marks another major development in the ongoing investigation.
The case involves serious allegations of extortion, violence, and organized intimidation targeting a local promoter. Investigators are now examining the broader network and possible involvement of additional individuals.
The arrest has caused significant tension in the area, with residents expressing concern over rising criminal activity linked to extortion demands. Police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and further action may follow based on custodial interrogation and evidence collection.
