July 20, 2023 : Nine people were killed and 13 others injured when a speeding car ploughed into a crowd gathered at an accident site on a flyover in Ahmedabad on Thursday, July 20, 2023. The accident occurred at around 12:30 a.m. on the ISKCON bridge on the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway. The car, a BMW X5, was reportedly running at over 100 kmph when it lost control and hit a crowd of people who had gathered to watch an accident between two other vehicles.

The impact of the crash was so severe that the car overturned and came to rest on its roof. Nine people, including three women, were killed on the spot. The 13 injured were taken to a nearby hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
The driver of the car, who has been identified as a 22-year-old man named Jayesh Patel, was arrested by the police. Patel is a resident of the city's Satellite area and is believed to be a student at a private college.

The police said that Patel was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. He has been charged with rash driving, causing death by negligence, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The accident has caused widespread shock and anger in the city. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has expressed grief over the loss of lives and has ordered a high-level inquiry into the matter. The police have appealed to the public to avoid gathering at accident sites. They have also urged motorists to drive carefully and obey traffic rules.
