IIE DIGITAL DESK : Kolkata, March 20: A significant weather shift is underway across Bengal as a strong influx of moisture from the Bay of Bengal creates favourable conditions for widespread rain and thunderstorms in both South and North Bengal. The regional meteorological office has warned that this unstable weather pattern is likely to persist over the next few days, bringing spells of rain, gusty winds and even hailstorms to multiple districts.

South Bengal, a large stretch of districts is expected to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, strong winds and scattered hail. Wind speeds during these storm systems could reach between 60 and 70 kilometres per hour, raising concerns over potential damage to crops, infrastructure and local transport disruptions. Districts including Purulia, Jhargram, Bankura, West Midnapore, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Hooghly and Howrah are particularly on alert, with forecasts indicating intense storm activity and the possibility of hail.

Kolkata is also likely to witness rainfall under this system, although the city is not expected to face extremely severe conditions at this stage. Intermittent showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds may sweep across the city, offering temporary relief from rising temperatures but also causing brief disruptions in daily life.

North Bengal is bracing for more intense weather conditions, with warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall issued for several districts. Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar have been placed under heightened alert due to the risk of extremely heavy downpours. In addition, areas such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong and parts of Jalpaiguri may experience heavy rainfall along with hailstorms, increasing the likelihood of landslides in hilly regions and waterlogging in low-lying areas.

The meteorological department has issued orange alerts for multiple districts, urging residents to remain cautious and stay updated with official advisories. As the weather system continues to evolve, authorities are closely monitoring the situation to mitigate risks and ensure public safety.
