IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, August 9: The anniversary of the historic Quit India Movement, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari paid tribute to the freedom fighters who made immense sacrifices in India's struggle for independence. On Sunday morning, the Chief Minister remembered the thousands of brave men and women who participated in the movement and expressed gratitude for their courage and sacrifice.

In a social media post, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recalled the significance of August 9, 1942, when the Quit India Movement was launched under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, giving a powerful call for an end to British rule in India. Marking the 84th anniversary of the historic movement, he said that the entire country had raised its voice against colonial rule with the determination to break the chains of slavery and bring freedom to the nation.

“Today is August 9, the 84th anniversary of the Quit India Movement of 1942. On that day, the entire country had roared with one voice, ‘Do or Die’, with the determination to break the chains of subjugation and bring the sun of freedom to the nation,” the Chief Minister wrote.

The Chief Minister said that the Quit India Movement became one of the most significant chapters in India's freedom struggle. Thousands of courageous sons and daughters of the country took part in the movement despite facing severe repression and hardships under British rule. Many freedom fighters were arrested, imprisoned and subjected to brutal treatment, while several others sacrificed their lives in the struggle for independence.

Remembering their contribution, Adhikari said that the sacrifices made during the historic movement were driven by a single objective — to ensure that future generations could breathe freely in an independent India. He emphasised that the freedom enjoyed by the country today was built on the courage, determination and sacrifices of those who stood against colonial rule.

“The historic Quit India Movement saw thousands of brave sons of the country make the ultimate sacrifice, with the sole aim of ensuring that the next generation could breathe freely in an independent India. On this historic day, I express my gratitude and pay my deepest respects to all those brave freedom fighters,” he said.

The Chief Minister further highlighted the lasting significance of the freedom fighters' contribution, stating that their courage and sacrifice formed the foundation of present-day independent India. He said their dedication to the nation would continue to inspire generations to come and remain an important part of India's collective memory.

The Quit India Movement, launched on August 9, 1942, marked a decisive phase in India's struggle against British colonial rule. The movement generated widespread public participation across the country and strengthened the demand for complete independence. The slogan “Do or Die” became a symbol of the determination of the Indian people to achieve freedom.
