IIE DIGITAL DESK ;  June 8: Bollywood actress Taapsee Pannu has spoken candidly about the age-based discrimination faced by actresses in the film industry, revealing that she was once made to feel unsuitable for certain lead roles despite being only around 30 years old. Her comments have reignited discussions about the double standards that exist between male and female actors in Bollywood.

Taapsee, actresses often face questions about their age and suitability for lead roles much earlier in their careers than their male counterparts. She pointed out that while many leading male stars continue to headline major films well into their 50s and 60s, women frequently encounter barriers once they reach their thirties.

The issue, Taapsee Pannu questioned why such standards are rarely applied to male superstars. She cited examples of actors such as Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, and Akshay Kumar, all of whom have enjoyed long and successful careers and continue to attract audiences largely on the strength of their names. In contrast, she noted, actresses often receive fewer opportunities as they grow older.

The recent interview, Taapsee recalled that she entered Bollywood while still in her twenties. However, it took her several years of struggle before she was able to establish herself and secure significant roles. By the time she had gained a firm foothold in the industry, she was already around 30 years old.

The actress revealed that she had been told on several occasions that certain roles required a younger woman. Such comments, she said, highlighted the unequal treatment women face in the entertainment industry. According to Taapsee, this kind of reasoning is rarely used when casting male actors, even when they are much older than the actresses appearing opposite them.

She admitted that these experiences affected her emotionally at one stage of her career and caused considerable frustration. The realization that age could become a barrier despite talent and hard work was difficult to accept. Nevertheless, she explained that her perspective has changed over time.

Today, Taapsee Pannu says she no longer dwells on such issues. Instead, she prefers to focus on the opportunities she receives and concentrate on delivering strong performances. Rather than worrying about industry perceptions, she is committed to portraying each character with sincerity and dedication.

The ongoing debate over ageism and gender inequality in the film industry, where many actresses have spoken about losing roles despite successful careers, while male stars often continue to enjoy leading-man status for decades. As conversations about representation and equal opportunities continue, Taapsee’s comments have added another important voice to the discussion surrounding fairness and longevity in Bollywood.
